영국 소설가 루이스 캐럴(Lewis Carroll)의 ‘이상한 나라의 앨리스(Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)’의 속편 ‘거울나라의 앨리스(Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There)’에 나오는 이야기입니다.
거울나라에 간 앨리스가 붉은 여왕의 손을 잡고 달리기를 합니다. 그런데 죽을힘을 다해 달려도 마치 운명의 족쇄가 채워진 듯 제자리에 멈춰 있습니다. 붉은 여왕이 당황해하는 앨리스에게 말합니다.
“이곳은 어떤 물체가 움직일 때 주변 세계도 그에 따라 함께 움직여! 제자리에 서 있고 싶으면 죽을힘을 다해 뛰어야 해! 가만히 서 있는 것은 곧 뒤처지는 거야! 어디론가 가고 싶다면 아까보다 두 배는 빨리 뛰어야 해!”
붉은 여왕 효과(Red Queen effect)는 사카고 대학 진화생물학자 리 반 베일른(Leigh Van Valen)이 생태계의 평형 관계를 묘사하기 위해 제시한 진화 법칙입니다. 어떤 대상이 변하려 해도 주변 환경과 경쟁 대상도 함께 끊임없이 변하기 때문에 상대적으로 뒤처지거나 제자리에 머무는 현상을 말합니다.
붉은 여왕 가설(Red Queen's Hypothesis), 붉은 여왕 이론(Red Queen Theory), 붉은 여왕 법칙(The Red Queen Principle)이라고도 합니다.
급변하는 현대 사회에서는 가만히 서 있으면 뒤처지고 마는 냉혹한 현실입니다. 있는 힘껏 달려야 겨우 남에게 뒤처지지 않는 정도가 되는 것이지요. 붉은 여왕 효과는 이런 냉혹한 사회 분위기를 풍자할 때 자주 쓰이는 표현입니다.
오늘 하루도 제자리에 가만히 서 있기 위해 직장에서, 가정에서, 그리고 학교에서 죽을힘을 다해 달리는 우리들의 모습을 발견합니다. 특히 학교와 학원을 오가며 많은 스트레스를 받는 어린이와 청소년들의 모습을 보면 기성세대로서 미안한 마음이 듭니다.
우리는 어디로 가고 있는 걸까요? 우리는 과연 제대로 가고 있는 걸까요?

This is the story from 'Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There', the sequel to “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll.
Alice goes to the Wonderland of the Mirror and runs while holding the hand of the Red Queen. However, even if they run with all their might, they stay in place as if the chains of fate have been shackled. The Red Queen tells Alice, who is perplexed.
“"Faster! Faster! Here, when an object moves, the world around it moves with it! If you want to stand still, run with all your might! If you stand still, you will soon fall behind! If you want to go somewhere, you have to run twice as fast as before!”
The Red Queen effect is an evolutionary law proposed by Sakago University evolutionary biologist Leigh Van Valen to describe the equilibrium relationship of an ecosystem. It refers to a phenomenon in which an object lags behind or stays in place because the surrounding environment and the competition object are constantly changing together even when an object tries to change.
Also known as Red Queen's Hypothesis, Red Queen Theory, and The Red Queen Principle.
In today's rapidly changing society, standing still is the harsh reality of falling behind. You have to run as hard as you can to get to the point where you just don't fall behind others. The Red Queen effect is often used to satirize this grim social climate.
Even today, we find ourselves running with all our might to stand still at work, at home, and at school. Especially when I see children and teenagers who are under a lot of stress going back and forth between schools and academies, I feel sorry for the older generation.
