미국 소방관 ‘앨빈 윌리엄 린’(A. W. Linn)이 화마 속 어린이를 구하지 못한 자책감에 쓴 기도문
신이시여.
제가 부름을 받을 때는 아무리 강력한 화염 속에서도
한 생명을 구할 수 있는 힘을 저에게 주소서.
거대한 두려움이 밀려와도 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 용기를 주소서.
타오르는 불길 속에서도 가냘픈 외침을 듣게 하시고
용광로처럼 뜨거운 열기 속에서도 냉정한 판단으로 화재를 진압하게 하소서.
그리하여 너무 늦기 전에 어린아이를 감싸 안을 수 있게 하시고
공포에 떠는 노인을 구하게 하소서
아이의 이름을 부르며 절규하던 어머니가 눈물을 멈추게 하시고
목놓아 아버지를 부르던 자식들이 안도하게 하소서.
부디 우리가 구하지 못한 생명이 없게 하소서.
만일 한 생명을 구하려다 저의 목숨이 사라진다면
남은 저의 아내와 가족을 돌보아주소서.
저의 뜨거운 마지막 순간이
남은 가족들을 지켜주는 밝은 빛이 될 수 있도록 부디 허락해주소서.

우리들의 영웅 소방관들을 위해 기도합니다.
그리고
소방관들이 자신의 사명을 통해
하느님의 부르심에 응답한 것처럼
자신의 자리에서 묵묵히 헌신하는 또 다른 영웅들 (평신도들)
평신도를 뜻하는 영어단어 “laity”
“하느님의 백성”이란 뜻의 그리스어 “λαός(라오스)”에서 유래
즉, 평신도는 ‘평범한 신도’가 아니라
세상 한복판에서 하늘나라를 건설하는 일꾼이라는 뜻
“평신도들의 임무는 자기 소명에 따라 현세의 일을 하고 하느님의 뜻대로 관리하며 하느님의 나라를 추구하는 것이다.”

하느님 뜻에 맞게 살기 위해 노력하는

The Hongje-dong fire in 2001 killed the most firefighters in Korean history.

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.
Give me the courage to move forward in the face of great fear.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
Help me to embrace a little child
Before it’s too late,
Or some older person
from the horror of that fate.
The mother who was screaming calling the child's name stopped the tears
May the children who used to call upon their fathers be relieved.
Please don't let us have the life we didn't save.
And if according to Your will I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand My children and my wife.
Please allow my hot last moments to become a bright light that protects the rest of my family.

We pray for our hero firefighters.
And, Just as firefighters responded to God's call through their mission, other heroes(laity) who silently dedicate themselves to their places.
The English word for “laity”
Derived from the Greek word “λαός(laos)” meaning “people of God”
In other words, the lay faithful are not 'ordinary believers', but workers who build the kingdom of heaven in the middle of the world.
“The task of the lay faithful is to do temporal work according to their vocation, to manage according to God’s will, and to pursue the kingdom of God.”

We pray for all of us who strive to live according to God's will at home and at work.
