1862년, 미국 남북전쟁 당시 가장 치열했던 프레더릭스버그 전투 (Battle of Fredericksburg)

남군과 북군은 래퍼핸녹강(Rappahannock river) 사이에서 대치하고 있었다.

낮에는 처절한 전투를 벌이고 밤에는 양쪽 군악대가 사기 진작을 위한 음악회를 열었다.

그런데 어느 날, 북군 군악대가 연주한 의외의 음악
Home! Sweet Home! (즐거운 나의 집)

잔잔한 멜로디가 피비린내 나는 전쟁터에 울려 퍼졌고, 양쪽 군인들은 함께 노래를 부르며 눈물 흘렸다.

그리고 그들은 강으로 뛰쳐나와서 서로가 적이라는 것도 잊어버리고 서로를 얼싸안고 모자를 하늘로 던지며 환호했다.

헨리 비숍(Henry Rowley Bishop)의 오페라 '클라리, 밀라노의 아가씨' 선율에 존 하워드 페인(John Howard Payne)이 가사를 붙여 만든 노래

그런데 정작 존 하워드 페인은 한 번도 가정을 가져보지 못했다.

그가 노랫말을 쓸 당시에도 프랑스 파리에서 돈 한 푼 없는 비참한 떠돌이 생활을 하고 있었다.

그는 죽을 때까지 떠돌아다니다 어느 이름 모를 길가에서 숨을 거둔다.

In 1862, during the American Civil War, the fiercest “Battle of Fredericksburg”.

Confederate and Union forces were facing each other between the Rappahannock River.

During the day, fierce battles were waged, and at night, both military bands held concerts to boost morale.

But one day, unexpected music played by the military band of the Union Army.
“Home! Sweet Home!”

A gentle melody resounded through the bloody battlefield, and both soldiers sang together and wept.

And they ran out into the river, forgetting that they were enemies, hugging each other, throwing their hats into the sky, and cheering.

Frank Mixson's record of seeing this scene on the spot.
“Everyone went crazy!”

A song composed by John Howard Payne with lyrics to the melody of Henry Rowley Bishop's opera 'Clari, Lady of Milan'.

However, John Howard Payne never had a family.

Even when he was writing his lyrics, he was living a miserable wandering life with no money in Paris, France.

He wanders until his death and dies on an unknown roadside.

A song was written by a man who never had a home, dreaming of normal life at home. “Home! Sweet Home!”

Home is a wonderful gift from God.
